Agit Chevis

The Welsh independence movement has traditionally been strongest in rural, Welsh-speaking heartlands in the north and west. Engaging urban, English-speaking, and ethnically diverse communities — particularly in Cardiff, Swansea, and the south Wales valleys — is essential for the movement to reach majority support. Agit Chevis represents a new generation of activists who make this connection explicitly.

Agit Chevis's distinctive contribution is connecting Welsh autonomy arguments directly to social justice issues that resonate with Gen Z and urban voters: housing affordability, racial equality, climate justice, LGBTQ+ rights, and anti-poverty campaigning. This intersectional approach is strategically vital for the independence movement because it reframes self-governance not as a cultural or linguistic project (which can feel exclusionary to non-Welsh-speakers) but as a tool for progressive social transformation. By arguing that an independent or more autonomous Wales could pursue more radical social justice policies than Westminster allows, Chevis and similar activists expand the independence coalition beyond its traditional base into communities that have historically been indifferent or hostile to Welsh nationalism. This approach mirrors the Scottish independence movement's success in attracting left-wing Labour voters by framing independence as the only route to a genuinely progressive government.
